Volunteer with CPC and help conserve for tomorrow…today!

Do you have an interest in preserving our valuable natural resources and want to use your time and efforts to further conservation activities in the Central Pennsylvania region? Consider volunteering with CPC! We need and appreciate volunteers in any of a number of areas and from every background and skill level. Everyone has something to contribute.Please contact CPC if you would like to volunteer your time to serve on any of the following committees:

Board Development Committeeis responsible for the general affairs of the board. Specific tasks include some or all of the following responsibilities:

  • To prepare priorities for board composition;
  • To meet with prospective board members and recommend candidates to the board;
  • To recommend a slate of officers to the board;
  • To conduct orientation sessions for new board members and to organize training sessions for the entire board, and;
  • To suggest new, non-board individuals for committee membership for potential development into board members.

Budget and Finance Committeeis responsible for establishing a budget and monitoring the financial status of CPC, as well as coordinating with the Committee Chairs regarding their financial needs and responsibilities. The Budget and Finance Committee tasks are:

  • To review budgets with meaningful involvement by committee chairpersons, and assuring a consistency between the budget and the organization's plans.
  • To report to the board any financial irregularities, concerns, opportunities.
  • To recommend financial guidelines to the board (such as to establish a reserve fund or to obtain a line of credit or Bridge Loan for a specified amount).
  • To work with staff to design financial reports and ensure that reports are accurate and timely.
  • To oversee short and long-term investments.
  • To recommend selection of the auditor and work with the auditor
  • To advise the executive director and other appropriate staff on financial priorities and information systems, depending on committee member expertise.

Fundraising Committee –  is responsible for overseeing the organization's overall fundraising and, in particular, the fundraising done by the board. To accomplish this, its responsibilities are:

  • To work with staff to establish a fundraising plan that incorporates a series of appropriate vehicles, such as donor programs (project specific), annual appeal, special events, capital campaign, etc.
  • To assist staff in efforts to raise money
  • To take the lead in certain types of outreach efforts, such as chairing a dinner/dance committee or hosting fundraising parties, etc.
  • To be responsible for involvement of all board members in fundraising, such as having board members make telephone calls to ask for support, and
  • To monitor fundraising efforts to be sure that ethical practices are in place, that donors are acknowledged appropriately, and that fundraising efforts are cost-effective.

Land Protection Committee – develops strategies, targets properties, reviews proposals, evaluates and prioritizes all potential properties - acquisitions and easements for proposal to the CPC Board. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Set strategic priorities and secure tools for identifying and evaluating land protection projects;
  • Develop/Oversee landowner outreach and cultivation strategies; 
  • Develop/Oversee land transaction and easement processes to insure soundness;
  • Develop and maintain successful partnerships for achieving land protection;
  • Make land acquisition and easement recommendations to Board for approval/denial;
  • Develolp land protection policy and procedures;
  • Develop land management plans for fee owned properties;
  • Evaluate stewardship costs and implications for protection projects

Stewardship Committee –  When CPC purchases a property or accepts the donation of property or a conservation easement, we are responsible for its long term care and stewardship.  Specific responsibilities include:

  • Draft Stewardship policy and procedure to guide staff and Board;
  • Oversee management of fee owned properties;
  • Oversee coordination of conservation easement lands monitoring and long-term protection;
  • Provide legal expertise for stewardship activities;
  • Work to ensure that Stewardship practices at CPC are in concert with national standards and practices

Marketing/Communications Committee – will be responsible for the development and implementation of a marketing/communications plan. These tasks include:

  • Creating and maintaining a standardized look for all documents; brochures; templates for: press releases, PowerPoints, e-mails, etc.; trade Show Display; etc.
  • Market Research - knowledge/perception of CPC; demographic and psychographic information, etc.; trends
  • Public Relations - Maintain PR list; PSA opportunities; write/distribute/pitch press releases; PR opportunities - land preservation; partnerships, etc.; public spaking opportunities
  • Branding/Messaging - website; appeal letters; membership ID; taglines/fundraisers; etc.
  •  Data Mining - membership; fundraising; PR; events, etc.
  • Events Sub-Committee –plans, coordinates and executes public events (Earth Day, Stream Clean-up, Conservationist of the Year Banquet, Ceremonies, etc.)

Outreach Committee – development and implementation of a membership plan, partnership development and coordination and volunteer recruitment
