Why a Rain Barrel?

By installing a rain barrel on your property you can:

- divert water from storm drain systems thus reducing nonpoint source pollution in local streams
- reduce erosion of local strema banks
- Conserve local ground water resources by using stored water in your rain barrel for your lawn and garden
- reduce your WATER BILL by using free water captured in your rain barrel to water your lawn and garden

How Rain Barrels Work

Rain Barrels are above ground storage vessels that capture rain water runoff from a building's roof using the gutter downspout system. By capturing the water, you are able to release it into the ground more slowly at a time whn the ground is not already saturated. This allows the water to more fully infiltrate into the ground to recharge local aquifers instead of running off the surface and flushing the sediment and pollution into our local streams.

The Central Pennsylvania Conservanacy's Rain Barrel Initiative is made possible through a partnership with Diakon Tressler Wilderness School and the Cumberland County Conservation District.
