Flora of the Month - May 2010 - Trillium

Trillium, a beautiful nighshade plant, can be found if you look closely at the Pine Hill Arboretum in Enola.  This Arboretum, permanently protected through a conservation easement with the Central Pennsylvania Conservancy, is known for being home to a variety of species of wildflowers.

Tillium grandifolia, the most common species and has been the subject of folklore for many centuries.  The root of this plant, once believed by the Native Americans to be a sacred female herb, was only spoken of in private with medicine women.

Trillium is most commonly found growing in thick woods with rich soil.  It is an ornamental and long-lived plant that propagates through rhizomes.  Because of this it is said to be a polymorphic species that is very subject to mutation, so look for subtle changes to each flower or leaf of a plant when you are viewing.  You may just be pleasantly surprised when you spot a new color combination or tint.

Currently, more than 50 species of trilliums exist worldwide, with many of them growing on the east coast of North America.  In central PA you will find trilliums appearing in early spring and for this reason they have been given the name “Goddess’ Footsteps.” Trillium species will bloom from April to June, so this spring is a great time to get out and discover the Trillium at Pine Hill Arboretum.  But watch your step! It is considered bad luck to squish this plant underfoot!

Please note Pine Hill Arboretum is open to the public, however please do not pick or destroy any of the plants in this space.  They are for the enjoyment of the community and are for viewing purposes only.
