Thousand Steps - Brady Twp, Huntingdon County
CPC acquired 669 acres of wooded mountain land that was formerly the Harbison-Walker quarry property. The area is home to some of Pennsylvania’s rare species and has three miles of hiking trails. The land was conveyed to the Pennsylvania Game Commission in 1999 with an easement retained by the Keystone Trails Association for the “Steps Trail” and the area around historic “Dinky House” near the summit. The area is open for public use and hunting is permitted. Camping is prohibited. Access is available by means of a paved parking lot along Route 22.
Seven Gables Park - Carlisle Borough and South Middleton Twp, Cumberland County
Seven Gables is a beautiful 15 acre urban park that is a remnant of the former estate of the Bosler Family. Many of the parks trees were planted in the mid 19th century and have grown to be the largest of their species in the county and state. The park was conveyed jointly to the Borough of Carlisle and South Middleton Township in 1998. The park is open for public use. Parking area, trails, and tree identification signage have been constructed to make this park more accessible to the public.
Miller’s Gap on Blue Mountain (Witmer Tract) - Silver Springs Twp (Cumberland Co.) and Rye Twp (Perry Co.)
Situated at the very top of Blue Mountain, Miller’s Gap is a 78 acre wooded property that is surrounded on three sides by State Game Lands 170. Located within an important bird migration route along the Kittatinny Ridge, this area provides outstanding scenic views and wildlife habitat. The property also contains a portion of the Darlington Trail (formerly the Appalachian Trail before relocation), a hiking trail extending approximately 10 miles from Sterretts Gap eastward through Millers Gap. The property was conveyed to the Pennsylvania Game Commission in 2001 and is now part of State Game Lands 170. The area is open for public access and includes a gravel parking area. Hunting is permitted.
Godshall Property - Huntingdon County
CPC purchased this 16.55 acre property in Huntingdon County and conveyed it to the Pennsylvania Game Commission in 2000. The addition of this property to State Game Lands 118 provided much needed access for the public to be able to use this area for hunting and recreation. This area is open for public access and includes a gravel parking. Hunting is permitted.
Melnyk Property (Incline Tract) - Huntingdon County
This 150 acre property was purchased by CPC in 2001 as an addition to the Thousand Steps Project. It was then conveyed to the Pennsylvania Game Commission and is an addition to State Game Lands 112. This area is open for public access and hunting is permitted. Camping is prohibited.
Millers Gap on Blue Mountain (Lightner Tract) - Rye Twp, Perry County
This 79 acre property is located on the north side of Blue Mountain along Miller's Gap Road in Rye Township. The area consists of woodlands, open fields and two streams. CPC acquired this property and conveyed it to the Pennsylvania Game Commission in 2001. It is bordered on three sides by State Games Lands No. 170 to the west, south, and east, and the Appalachian Trail to the north with good road access. Acquisition of this property has provided additional wildlife habitat and protected the view from the Appalachian Trail. The area is open to the public for hiking, hunting, and other forms of passive recreation.
Bucher Tract - Cumberland County
This property is adjacent to the Millers Gap on Blue Mountain - Witmer Tract. CPC purchased the 66 acres and conveyed the property to the Pennsylvania Game Commission. This area was an addition to State Game Lands 170. The area is open for public access and hunting is permitted.
Dahr Tract - Dauphin County
CPC purchased this 30 acre property in 2005. The property is located in Stony Creek Valley at the top of Second Mountain. It has been conveyed to the Pennsylvania Game Commission and is now part of State Game Lands 211. The area is open for public access and hunting is permitted.
Halifax Township Park - Halifax Township, Dauphin County
Formerly the Sarah Yeager Estate, this property consists of 174 acres which is bordered on one side by the Susquehanna River and contains a long stretch of Armstrong Creek on the other. It also contains the historical site of Fort Halifax (1751). CPC purchased the property and conveyed it to Halifax Township, while retaining a conservation easement in 2006. The area is open to the public for passive recreational uses.
Boyd Big Tree Addition (Schreckengaust) - Lower Paxton Twp, Dauphin County
This 79.6 acre property was purchased by the CPC and then conveyed to the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) in 2006. Located at the top of Blue Mountain, this wooded area is an addition to the 914 acre DCNR Boyd “Big Tree” State Conservation Area to the west, and a short distance to the east is the Lower Paxton Township Park. As a part of the Kittatinny Ridge, this area is a natural flyway for migratory birds and is an Important Bird Area (IBA) as designated by Pennsylvania Audubon. It contains a long segment of the former Appalachian Trail (now the Darlington Trail) and significant wildlife habitat. As with the Boyd Conservation Area, hunting will be permitted. This area is open for public access.
Half Falls Mountain - Watts and Buffalo Twp, Perry County
This mature woodland property consisting of 131 acres on the top of Half Falls Mountain adjoins State Game Lands 254. It was purchased by CPC and conveyed to the Pennsylvania Game Commission in 2006 and is now part of SGL 254. At the top of the mountain and along the Kittatinny Ridge, this property is only 1000 feet from the Susquehanna River and is a natural flyway for migratory birds. This area has great road frontage and provides easy access to the public for hunting.
